Let's Be the Change we Seek
We all have gifts and talents to offer. I believe we must find ways to share our offerings that contribute to solutions to create greater equality, and opportunities for all. No matter how big a role we play, we must be the change we seek in the world.
If we look to our traditions of “collective assembly” in spiritual gatherings and celebrations that have been the most powerful conveners of collective joy and humanity we can find how we can come together to be the change.
A stranger’s cry for help inadvertently led me to discover that sharing my humble gifts during collective assembly could also lead to collective healing. You see, I was asked for help by a young man who had just aged out of the foster care system. In responding to his request and in turning his empty section 8 apartment into a functioning home, I came to understand that he had never felt at home – anywhere – in his entire life. And that that very fundamental feeling I know so well – the feeling of home that has anchored and guided me – was something he was bereft of. This caused him to feel adrift in the world; without a sense of home, we do not have a sense of belonging in the world; without it, we do not have a foundation from which we can build a future that reflects our hopes and dreams.
I saw in this young man’s needs an opportunity for community to come together, to be the change. By simply sharing what we have too much of, is a means by which we can build a bridge — connecting disparate communities. A bridge we can traverse to not only create a home for one in need (in the spirit of a barn raising) but to bare witness to an unfolding criss and be a part of the solution for creating healthier communities.
My random act of kindness in helping that young man evolved into a nonprofit, A Sense of Home (ASOH).
What I discovered is that when we gather with strangers in collective moments to share our gifts and talents to be the change we seek -- we can also share our joy and pain. When we do so we bare witness to what we have all been missing and yearning for -- our inextricable human connection. The magic that happens at a home creation adds profound meaning and purpose to the lives of all involved. It is the “village effect that make us healthier, happier and smarter” (Susan Pinker). The win-win impact has meant we are overwhelmed with the demand to open up ASOH chapters around the western world.
This site humbly reflects some of my design and cooking style as well as the insights I am baring witness to through the gift that is A Sense of Home. Thank you for stopping by. Georgie xo
